Description
Spinel lithium manganese oxide is a type of cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. It is composed of lithium, manganese, and oxygen atoms arranged in a spinel structure, which is a cubic lattice with oxygen atoms at the corners and metal atoms in the center of the faces and the body.
Spinel lithium manganese oxide has some advantages as a cathode material, such as high thermal stability, good cycling performance, and low cost. It can also operate at higher voltages than other cathode materials, such as lithium cobalt oxide and lithium iron phosphate, which means it can store more energy per unit mass. However, spinel lithium manganese oxide also has some drawbacks, such as capacity fading, manganese dissolution, and poor rate capability. These problems can be alleviated by doping or coating the material with other elements, such as nickel, cobalt, or aluminum.
Unlike the 5V Spinel Cathode LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4, the voltage plateau of LMO is around 4.0V vs. Lithium.
